Bouncy Bouncy Orange Blue Roll Ball Roll

It’s there, in the snow,

To be excavated like buried treasure,

A bouncy bouncy orange blue roll ball roll.

And dogs do dig and claw

And so he gets it,

Big orange mouth

And the troubles start here

With the bouncy bouncy orange blue roll ball roll.

For Mother N. has left

Ice on snow on dirt leaves road

And so the ball becomes

Less obedient than the dog is.

            Long gone.

And the dog,

Who only paused to sniff, must chased stiff-legged on the ice

Until he claims back obedience

Orange mouth stuffed once more

With the bouncy bouncy orange blue roll ball roll.

Yet just a minute later

Half way through the editorial comments

He is leaving on a bush,

He drops it,

And off it goes, skittering down the leaf slope,

And the dog must leave the bush half-marked

And skitter down slope behind it.

This time it comes to rest under a log,

Whereupon he must

Examine the situation from three directions,

Until he hops over and vanishes headfirst,

To re-emerge triumphant and once more orange-mouthed.

By the time we reach the house he is

By the demands of exploring winter wonder woodlands

While parenting

One super-important, rather insubordinate,

Bouncy bouncy orange blue roll ball roll.
