The Time Before

Dear Pat, This is for you, so you, too, remember. With love,

I am here to hear the children

To hear their voices from the time before shame

claimed them

I am here to see the children

To see their light the way it was before they conspired with us

To dim it

I am here to be the children

To sing them the true songs of themselves

Until they remember

And are glad of it

Your sweet poem made me cry. I will put it in my lesson plan book so that I can read it every day. Alix, these children come to school after a night of sexual abuse, violence, and who know what. I have seen burns on their bodies, one girl witnessed her father beat a man to death and then came to school the next day! We didn’t know what had happened just that her behavior was so outrageous that we had to assume that it was something at home. Two nights ago, I had a powerful meditation which showed me why I was getting so upset with them and had trouble detaching from their behavior. I am so thankful that Spirit showed me this. Your poem is another gift to help me work with these children who can be so loving and eager at times. And when they seem unlovable is when they need love the most! Thanks again! love, pat

Ahh, our challenge as teachers, isn’t it? To be in the energy of our classrooms, but not of it, to hold our own space and to know that each of these lovely lights is walking their own path in the way that they have chosen they must.

But I know what you mean.
    Love and light,

  3. Absolutely beautiful.
    I am speechless.
I want to read it again and again.
Thank you Alix, thank you Pat for the link.

Isn’t that what so many of us want–just to be seen?
    I see you.
